Even mild acne can be distressing.1 Without a doubt, acne can cause enough embarrassment and unhappiness  to affect your self-confidence, your self-perception and your physical appearance. It could even interfere with your everyday activities, such as sports, dating and eating out.1 This is all the more reason to take acne and its treatment seriously and treat sooner rather than later. Remembering to stick to your treatment every day and not having unrealistic expectations are important. It takes  time for acne to heal but the effort is well worth it!

Understanding acne

  • Acne is common - nearly 80% of people suffer from acne.
  • Chocolate and fatty foods do not cause acne.2

In order to understand how acne treatment works it is important to understand
that acne is a complex disease caused by four interacting factors:2,3
  1. Too much waxy-oily substance produced (sebum) (different to sweat)
  2. Abnormal thickening of the skin's outer layer (epidermis)
  3. An increase in skin bacteria
  4. Inflammation

If your acne's getting in the way of your life, then it's time to book an appointment with your doctor or dermatologist. Your dermatologist will not only listen to your concerns and anxieties, but will also prescribe the best treatment for your type of skin. Treatments can either be oral (tablets or capsules), topical (applied to the skin) or a combination of the two. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist and get the best solution for you.

In order to achieve the best possible results you need to use your medication as prescribed by your doctor and stick to therapy. As with many things in life, there is no quick fix solution. Important steps to acne treatment

Cleanse

Normal soaps are often harsh on the skin especially when your skin is vulnerable from acne. Cetaphil® cleansing lotion and bar are specially formulated to cleanse without irritating the skin, as they are non-drying, oil and fragrance free, non irritating, non-alkaline and won't clog pores. Medicate

It is best to consult a dermatologist or your doctor for treatment sooner rather than later. The earlier you start acne treatment the better your chances of getting it under control. It is important to be realistic about your expectations and to remember that treatment takes time, at least several months.

Moisturise

Acne itself or some of the treatments may result in an irritated skin. You can moisturise with a non- irritating moisturiser that won't clog pores.   • Use an effective, sun block when going into the sun
  • Be patient and stick to your treatment
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice
  • Avoid alcohol products which may irritate your skin
  • Never apply more medication than recommended by your doctor in the hope that  it will work faster
  • Never pick or squeeze any pimple or lesion on your face

Aknee kan diepgaande sielkundige nagevolge hê wat selfs nie eers verband hoef te hou met die ernstigheid daarvan nie. Selfs ligte aknee kan kommerwekkend wees. Behandelings kan mondelings wees (tablette of kapsules) of topikaal (vir aanwending aan die vel) of 'n kombinasie van die twee. Vir die beste resultate

Ten einde die beste positiewe resultate te verkry, moet jy jou medisyne gebruik soos deur jou dokter voorgeskryf en ook met die behandeling volhou. Soos met baie dinge in die lewe is daar geen  kitsoplossing nie. Dit neem tyd vir die behandeling om te werk en die onderliggende probleem op te los. Belangrike stappe in akneebehandeling

Reinig


Gewone sepe is dikwels hard op die vel, veral wanneer die vel gevoelig is as gevolg van aknee.   • Wees geduldig en bly by jou behandeling
  • Raadpleeg jou dokter of apteker
  • Vermy alkoholiese produkte wat jou vel kan irriteer
  • Moet nooit meer medisyne aanwend as wat jou dokter aanbeveel het in die hoop dat dit vinniger sal werk nie
  • Moet nooit enige puisie of letsel op jou gesig krap of druk nie
